Ethan Hawke named as narrator of VR film “Invasion!”
California-based Baobab Studios has announced the casting of Oscar-nominated actor Ethan Hawke as the narrator in “Invasion!,” the interactive VR animated film that has its world premiere at the Tribeca Film Festival in New York on Saturday, April 16.
Hawke, who is currently starring in the feature film “Born to Be Blue,” is the Voice of the Cosmos in “Invasion!,” which follows the misadventures of a pair of extraterrestrials. The aliens have a close encounter with a pair of adorable bunnies – and the viewer gets to be one of them in the virtual-reality experience. The movie is directed by Baobab Studios co-founder Eric Darnell, the DreamWorks vet whose feature film directorial credits include “Madagascar” and “Antz.”
The narration, based on the opening paragraph of H.G. Wells “The War of the Worlds,” was something that the actor immediately identified with, said Darnell.
“It turns out that Ethan grew up near Grover’s Mill, New Jersey, the site where the aliens in ‘War of the Worlds’ first landed,” Darnell said. “He told me that each year in elementary school, the very passage I’d handed him was read aloud in class. Considering the similar themes found in “Invasion!,” I couldn’t imagine a more fitting or enthusiastic partner to narrate our film than the incomparable Ethan Hawke.”
